On San Juan’s eve, the traditional bonfires in Ferrol are called “luminarias”. The smell of fire and sardines is everywhere in the city. Sardines are roasted outdoors and accompanied by other delicacies such as empanada, as well as wine and music.
It is worth noting the bonfires festival organized in Esteiro, one of the historical neighborhoods of the city. The Neighbors Association usually organizes a “mariner’s market” this day. Free guided tours are also programmed through the neighborhood to the Dolores Barracks and Fontelonga – the only one of the former doors that opened on the walls that protected the city in the 18th Century-.
